Before you read this blog post we want to remind you that the world doesn’t need a handful of people being perfectly sustainable, we need billions of people making small changes and trying their best. You don’t have to be perfect, every little change towards a more sustainable lifestyle really does help.
The 3 R’s: Reduce Reuse Recycle play an important role in sustainable living.
Let’s try to reduce the amount of waste we produce, reuse items as much as we can, and recycle items wherever possible.
How can you REDUCE the amount of waste you produce?
- Try to only buy what you need
- Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers
- Buy in bulk
- Choose products with less packaging
How can you REUSE what you have?
- Reuse old clothing by donating it to charity
- Donate books to a library
- Refill your water bottle with water from home instead of buying a new one
- Reuse old glass containers and store rice, pasta, or oats
How can you RECYCLE the products that you don’t need anymore?
- There are some materials that can be recycled and be used for a new purpose. These materials can be recycled: plastic, glass, paper & cardboard, aluminum
- If you can’t donate your old laptop or TV bring it to electronic recycler locations
- Before you throw something in the trash, check whether all or part of it can be recycled
- There are huge variations in recycling policies between countries. Check your local public website
It is not about being perfect – it is about effort. So don’t be scared to make changes because you’re worried you’re not doing it correctly. Go ahead, make those changes, and be proud of yourself for helping to make a difference. All we can do is keep trying our best.
