Every day, large quantities of food are wasted. Did you know that about 30% of food never gets eaten worldwide? Reducing food waste would save money, natural resources, and help feed those in need.
Did you know animal proteins require more energy, land, and water than plant proteins? It takes about 25 times more energy to produce a calorie of beef than one calorie of corn for people to eat. If you still eat animal products you can make a huge difference by wasting less of what you eat, especially meat, seafood, and dairy.
Fruits and veggies get tossed the most, bananas and apples are some of the most wasted fruits. So what to do with wilted fruits and veggies?
You can freeze them to use later in baked goods. You can also use wilted fruits for smoothies and wilted veggies for soups.
If we produce food that doesn‘t get eaten we not only waste those products but also a lot of water, energy, and wildlife habitat.
Where does most food go to waste?
Is it on farms, during transportations, in supermarkets, or in restaurants and at home?
Sadly, more food is wasted in restaurants and at home than anywhere else along the supply chain. On the bright side, that means we have it within our power to take meaningful steps to protect our planet. By shopping smarter, planning better, and cooking more, we can all do our part – directly – to save food.
Whenever you are at a restaurant and can’t finish your meal just ask for a to-go container and enjoy it later at home.
Here are some tips to prevent food waste:
- Shop smarter, plan better, and cook more.
- Buy and order only what you will eat and learn to love leftovers.
- Ask for to-go containers at restaurants and freeze your food at home.
- Use wilted fruits for smoothies and wilted veggies for soups.
- What we eat affects the planet, so it’s important to be aware and consider the impact of what we eat.
LOVE FOOD, HATE WASTE!

Thank you for sharing these great tips! This is so important. I always ask for to-go-containers at restaurants when I can’t finish the meal. And I will use wilted veggies for soups from now on. 🙂
Thank you Loraine for your comment! We love that you always ask for to-go-containers, that makes a huge difference. We are so happy to hear you will be using wilted veggies for soups from now on. Happy cooking! 🙂
